‘Mamas and Papas Pro-Sleep IP’ is the newest infant carrier from the Italian company, Mamas and Papas that is designed to combine the convenience and safety benefits of the conventional rear-facing infant carrier, with the health and comfort benefits of a car seat which can recline your baby slightly, so that baby is lying closer to flat once you are out of the car.
It has been scientifically proven and encouraged by many health professionals, that laying baby flat for the newest months (approximately 0-6 months) is much healthier; babies who cannot support their own heads need to lie flat for longer to ensure they gain the maximum oxygen levels.
So, the Mamas and Papas Pro-Sleep IP infant carrier has a recline feature built into the Pro-Sleep IP’s shell, to allow baby to rest more comfortably – but please note that this recline feature can only be used when you are not travelling baby in the car.
Pro-Sleep IP is very easy to fit, and includes a safety indicator, which will give parents the peace of mind that the Pro-Sleep IP is correctly installed. Pro-Sleep IP has complete safety in mind, as the shell is designed to absorb energy in the event of an accident, and the Pro-Sleep IP’s seat structure is made from quality materials.
Pro-Sleep IP has great side impact protection due to its deep side supports, and will fit your baby snugly with the five-point harness which boasts a one-handed height adjustable harness, so you don’t have to re-route the harness every time you need to adjust it with your baby’s growth. Handily, Pro-Sleep IP’s ‘one pull harness adjuster’ makes fitting your little one in the seat, very easy. Also, Pro-Sleep IP boasts an integrated seat belt tension lever which will get the infant carrier very taught into the car’s seat.
Pro-Sleep IP’s carry handle acts as an anti-rotation device and its dual position handle will accommodate for different car seat shapes. For easier snoozing, the Pro-Sleep IP’s base allows baby to be rocked – should you choose – and the covers are removable for washing.
Pro-Sleep IP comes inclusive of a padded head support, comfort pad, chest pads, buckle pad and large removable hood. Pro-Sleep IP is also compatible with many travel system pushchairs; please see the list below.
Our View… is that the Mamas and Papas Pro-Sleep IP has a design which has baby’s best interests at heart, and will provide comfort and safety for your little one.
However, despite Pro-Sleep IP being able to recline, firstly – it can only be reclined when you are not travelling baby in the car; and for some parents who have family or friends who live far away, they need the car seat to be laying baby as flat as possible during their car journey – so for some, this infant carrier is a waste of time.
Secondly, even though Pro-Sleep IP can be reclined on the chassis or in your home for example, it still isn’t a true flat position, so the time limit health professionals give you (which sometimes depend on which area you live in the UK) still applies. We do not recommend sitting baby in and infant carrier before 6 months approximately, (or until baby can support his/her own head) for no more than 1-2 hours at a time.
Finally, there are better designed infant carriers that feature a recline-able back support which can be used when in use in the car, such as the Bebe Confort Creatis Fix, or the Jane Strata infant carrier. Also, there are several very good lie-flat car seats on the market which completely eradicate any issue of travelling baby with a limited time use.
